Even if your home is well-insulated, heated or cooled air can leak in and out through gaps and cracks and especially exhaust fans. By cutting down on drafts you can save up to 25 percent of your heating and cooling bills.
Weather sealing - or draft proofing - your home is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of substantiably lowering energy costs.
Look for gaps and cracks and block or fill them. They are often found around windows and ceiling light fittings. Check floorboards, architraves, skirting boards, sky-lights and cornices - anywhere there are joins.
Install weather-stripping on doors and windows. Put draft stoppers around external doors to help keep warm air in during winter and cool air from escaping in summer. ‘Snakes’ across the bottom of doors are a great start.
Check fans, vents and other outlets. You may be able to add covers to existing fans and ducting outlets.
And lastly, do a physical check on the in-roof insulation. A rather daunting and dirty task but so important to make sure there are no pieces missing so totally protecting the entire ceiling surface.
